floor to ceiling Great room

The floor-to-ceiling windows were the undeniable selling point of this mid-century modern great room. With natural light pouring in and uninterrupted views of the surrounding forest and golf course, our goal was simple: amplify the architecture while preserving the sense of a private, serene oasis.

To modernize and anchor the space, the original white windows and doors were replaced with black iron, creating contrast and drawing the eye outward to the landscape beyond. What was once three sets of doors was reimagined as expansive windows, with a single set of double doors leading to the patio—now furnished with an extra-long dining table designed for effortless entertaining.

The two-story fireplace serves as a second focal point. Previously painted white, the brick was transformed using a German schmear technique, over-grouted to achieve a softer, more organic, stone-like finish. A custom wood mantel, finished in plaster, was added to introduce warmth and layered texture while guiding the eye upward through the vertical volume of the room.

Custom Amish-built arched wood cabinetry replaced the existing white cabinets, adding architectural interest and a sense of craftsmanship, while white oak hardwood floors supplanted the original maple for a lighter, more timeless foundation. The furnishings balance scale and comfort: a large modular sofa, an oversized vintage burl wood coffee table, and plush modular velvet greige armchairs create a space that invites gathering without sacrificing sophistication.

Playful abstract artwork, a richly textured wool area rug, and thoughtfully layered materials bring movement and personality to the room. The result is a great room that feels equally suited for hosting and everyday living—impressive in scale, yet grounded in warmth, texture, and livable comfort.
